“Cheburashka” starts and wins?

To date, the family comedy “Cheburashka” by Dmitry Dyachenko, which was released on January 1, has already collected, according to the Unified Automated Information System (UAIS) of the Cinema Fund, 3,082,245,827 rubles. For comparison: the film’s budget is 850 million rubles.
What does this mean? The fact that on the tenth day of its release, the film overtook the sensational “Kholop” by Klim Shipenko, which until that moment was considered the highest-grossing film released in Russia.
It is curious that the jump in spectator attention fell precisely on the tenth day, since in the first nine days the fees were balanced only at around 963 million rubles. Distributors believe that this is the case when many factors influenced the success of the film and the interest shown in it, but the main one, apparently, is still “word of mouth”.
“Cheburashka” has only a little to gain in order to overtake the absolute leader of the domestic film distribution – Cameron’s “Avatar”, or rather, its first part, which collected 3.5 billion rubles.
The film is being distributed by the Central Partnership company, whose representatives are confident that Cheburashka can reach the milestone of 4 billion rubles, and the increased interest of viewers in an authentic Russian hero is a direct path to creating a franchise.
According to the employees of Soyuzmultfilm, which became a partner of the film, the success of the tape is connected not so much with word of mouth, but with the fact that Russian viewers have always shown a nostalgic interest in characters familiar from the Soviet era, in this case, the charming Cheburashka, on the screen history of which more than one generation of Russians grew up. Well, the strong cast of the tape, in which Elena Yakovleva, Sergey Garmash, Fedor Dobronravov played, also contributed to its success.
Important, of course, was the figure of the director himself. The name of a strong professional Dmitry Dyachenko is associated with the success of such tapes as Radio Day, What Men Talk About, and The Last Hero.
The excitement around “Cheburashka”, fueled by a well-done advertising campaign, is offset by individual skeptical statements by film critics. According to their estimates, “Cheburashka” in 2023 is very different from its animated prototype: the new hero is far from being so charming. And this is the case when there is no complete certainty that the new generation will love the hero in the same way that the older generation fell in love with his prototype. Well, the history of cinema knows many similar examples: take, for example, the continuation of The Irony of Fate, which has sunk into oblivion, despite the fact that the country stubbornly continues to watch the original, Ryazan version.
A negative assessment was given to the film by some artists who watched the film in the first days of rental. For example, artist and deputy Dmitry Pevtsov commented on the film something like this: “It’s boring. In each episode, you know how it will end. Terrible computer graphics… two hours of my life are gone… It’s not funny at all and I don’t feel sorry for anyone…”
