At the meeting, the BBC points out, the Lord President of the Privy Council (MP Penny Mordaunt) will announce the death of Queen Elizabeth and read aloud a proclamation that usually praises the previous monarch and declares support for the new one. The next meeting of the council will be attended by the King, who will make a declaration and take the traditional oath to defend the Church of Scotland.
Elizabeth II passed away the day before at the age of 96, Buckingham Palace reported. The flag is flown at half mast over the palace. The UK has declared national mourning for 10 days. After the queen’s death, her 73-year-old son Charles, who took the name of Charles III, took the throne.
96-year-old Elizabeth II of the Windsor dynasty ascended the British throne 70 years ago, in 1952, when Winston Churchill was the country’s prime minister. The Queen’s husband, Duke Philip of Edinburgh, died in 2021 at the age of 99. Elizabeth II herself in February 2022 had COVID-19, which, as the Daily Mail reported, she endured quite easily.
