Chairman of the LDPR will go by “locomotive” to the Yaroslavl Regional Duma – Kommersant

Leader of the LDPR, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky nominated as a candidate for deputies of the Yaroslavl Regional Duma. Kommersant was informed about this in the regional branch of the party.

The conference of the Yaroslavl regional branch of the LDPR, at which the nomination took place, was held on June 25. Mr. Slutsky headed one of the territorial groups of the party list, followed by the coordinator of the Liberal Democratic Party in the Yaroslavl region Evgeny Smirnov. It is he, most likely, who will get the mandate if the LDPR list overcomes the 5% barrier in the elections.

The regional branch confirmed to Kommersant that the nomination of Leonid Slutsky was agreed with the chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party and the federal leadership of the party. The head of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs himself did not take part in the conference of the regional department.

The party has already used the federal “locomotive” in the elections to the Yaroslavl Regional Duma in 2018, when the list of LDPR candidates was headed by Vladimir Zhirinovsky. LDPR coordinator Yevgeny Smirnov did not predict how the nomination of Mr. Slutsky would affect the party’s results in the regional Duma elections. But in general, the head of the Yaroslavl branch of the party is optimistic. “It is difficult to predict, because the electoral system has changed. In any case, we will work for victory, we count on victory, and I think we will win,” Mr. Smirnov told Kommersant.

In 2018, 12.9% of the Yaroslavl residents who took part in the vote voted for the LDPR party list in the Yaroblduma, headed by Vladimir Zhirinovsky. This allowed the Liberal Democratic Party to get three deputies into the Duma. In 2023, the law on the election of deputies of the Yaroslavl Regional Duma was changed. The total number of deputies of the regional duma has been reduced from 50 to 46, and only 12 deputies will be elected from party lists instead of 25 deputies. Voting in the Yaroslavl region will be three days and will take place from 8 to 10 September.
