The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has suspended Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva for four years for violating anti-doping rules. She will be stripped of her gold medal for winning the team event at the Olympics.
According to decision CAS, the period of ineligibility begins on December 25, 2021. On this day, the skater passed a positive doping test.
In addition, CAS has ruled that Kamila Valieva will be stripped of all competition results and awards achieved between December 25, 2021. “The consequences associated with the retroactive disqualification of Ms. Valieva for participation in past events, including participants in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing, were not subject to the scope of this arbitration procedure,” the court’s decision clarifies.
During the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, it became known that the banned drug trimetazidine was found in a sample of Kamila Valieva taken in 2021 at the Russian Championships in St. Petersburg. In December 2023, TASS, citing the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA), reported that over the past year the agency tested the skater for doping twice – in July and in November. Based on the results of the audit, RUSADA ruled that Valieva had committed a doping violation, but did not find any signs of “guilt or negligence” in her actions. The agency said that imposing sanctions on her is unacceptable.
Kamila Valieva does not admit guilt. Her defense claims that trimetazidine was used by the athlete’s grandfather after heart surgery. Valieva herself believes that the drug entered her body due to the fact that she drank from the same mug as her grandfather.
