CAS dismisses Russian clubs’ appeals against FIFA’s decision to suspend contracts with foreign players

Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected appeals of Russian football clubs, as well as the Ukrainian club Shakhtar, against the decision of the International Football Federation (FIFA) to suspend contracts with legionnaires. The decision regarding the transfer of players, valid until June 30, 2023, was taken in response to a military operation.
The appeal was filed by Zenit, Dynamo, Sochi, CSKA, Krasnodar, Lokomotiv, Rostov and Rubin. It was considered by two different boards of CAS. Both panels dismissed the appeals and affirmed the contested decision.
CAS registered appeals from Russian clubs against the decision to extend permission for foreign players and coaches to suspend contracts with Russian teams until June 2023 in August. In March FIFA allowed foreign football players of Russian clubs to find employment abroad. The federation has made temporary changes to its regulations on the status and transfers of players. They were connected with the “situation in Ukraine”.
Summer CAS rejected appeals by CSKA Moscow, Dynamo, Zenit St. Petersburg and Sochi against UEFA’s decision to remove Russian clubs from European competition for the 2022/23 season. In May, UEFA and FIFA, due to a military operation, banned domestic teams from participating in competitions under the auspices of organizations.
