A native of Bryansk, Russian grandmaster Ian Nepomniachtchi made a confident start at the 2024 Candidates Tournament in Toronto (Canada). Based on the results of four games, he has three points in his arsenal. Strong rivals – Fabiano Caruana from the USA and the representative of India Dommaraju Gukesh – are 0.5 points behind the leader.

In the fourth round of candidates, Ian Nepomniachtchi beat Vidit Santosh Gujrati from India. The tense game ended on the 45th move. In the next round, the Russian grandmaster will meet with another chess player from India – Rameshbabu Pragnanandha.

The series of games in the Tournament will last until April 22. The winner will compete for the world title with the current title holder, Chinese Ding Liren.

It should be added that previously Ian Nepomniachtchi twice became the favorite of the Candidates Tournament and fought for the chess crown. However, in one case he lost to the Norwegian Magnus Carslen, in the other to Ding Liren.
