British scientist who cloned Dolly the sheep dies

British embryologist Ian Wilmut, who at the end of the last century led a scientific experiment on cloning Dolly the sheep, died at the age of 80. The death of the scientist was announced by the University of Edinburgh, where he worked.
In the obituary, the university notes that it was Wilmut who led the team at the Roslin Institute, part of the University of Edinburgh, which successfully completed the first mammal cloning project. This scientific achievement still provides the basis for numerous studies in the field of regenerative medicine, the university noted.
During the sheep cloning experiment, geneticists used the transplantation of the nucleus of a donor’s somatic cell into the cytoplasm of the egg. As a result, on July 5, 1996, Dolly was born, who turned out to be an identical copy of the cell donor. The ewe lived for more than six years and gave birth to six lambs. In 2003, Dolly was euthanized due to illness. In 2008, Wilmut was knighted for his scientific services.
