Brazilian soccer player Alves to be charged with rape

The Court of Inquiry in Barcelona has concluded its investigation, concluding that there is evidence that the football player raped a 23-year-old woman in the bathroom of the Sutton nightclub in Barcelona on 30 December. Dani Alves, who is being held in custody, will be brought before the court of inquiry on August 2, after which the case file will be transferred to the Barcelona court for further proceedings, reports El Mundo.
Alves will be formally charged after being informed of the trial judge’s decision on August 2. Prosecutors will then refine the charges, with a trial date set for late this year or early 2024, AP reported. It is expected that the player will remain in custody until then.
The former star of the Spanish “Barcelona” and the French “Paris Saint-Germain” was detained in January. He is being held without bail. Initially, Dani Alves denied knowing the woman he was accused of raping. But when investigators questioned him after his arrest, the footballer changed his story, insisting the relationship was consensual, AFP reported. After the arrest, Alves was fired from the Mexican club Pumas UNAM.
Dani Alves has won 42 football titles, including three Champions Leagues with Barcelona and two Copa Americas with Brazil.
