Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva accused his predecessor, Jair Bolsonaro, and his administration of genocide against the indigenous Yanomami Indians of the Amazon. The Guardian writes about it.
Da Silva believes that with the consent of Bolsonaro, thousands of illegal miners flooded the territory where the Yanomami live, the Amazonian state of Roraime. This led to deforestation and pollution of rivers, the people lost their main sources of food. Recently, photographs of emaciated natives have circulated online.
“What I saw in Roraima was not just a humanitarian crisis, but a genocide. A deliberate crime against the Yanomami by a government that is indifferent to the suffering of the Brazilian people,” the President said.
Minister of Indigenous Affairs Sonia Guajajara also said that the area where the Yanomami live has a very high level of malnutrition and incidence of malaria and helminthiasis.
