Brazilian midfielders of the St. Petersburg club “Zenith” Malcolm and Claudinho were given permission to obtain Russian passports. This was announced by the general director of the club Alexander Medvedev.
“We received information about this, made the players happy. Now we are waiting for the date of the ceremony to be set,” Alexander Medvedev told TASS. He clarified that sports citizenship is not equivalent to country citizenship and that time must pass so that they can play for the Russian team.
“Sport Express” reported that the players should receive Russian passports during the spring. Alexander Medvedev said that if Malcom received Russian citizenship in 2024 and Claudinho in 2026, they would receive sports citizenship and the right to play for the Russian national team.
Malcolm and Claudinho are 25 years old. They are champions in the Brazilian national team. Malcolm has been playing for Zenit since 2019, Claudinho since 2021. In July 2022, Zenit signed an agreement with them to extend the contracts of both players. Contracts are calculated until the season 2026/2027.
