Brazilian court dismisses capital region governor

The Governor of the Capital Federal District of Brazil, Ibanez Rocha, has been temporarily removed from the leadership of the region. About it informs newspaper O Globo, citing a ruling by the country’s Supreme Court.

The court suspended the governor of the capital region for 90 days. The court’s decision noted that the alleged demonstrations “was a common knowledge”, but the county authorities were “inactive”. Moreover, added Judge Alexandre de Morais, the protests took place “with the consent and even with the effective participation of the competent authorities.” The judge emphasized that attacks on Brazilian government institutions will not go unpunished.

The removal of Ibanez from office is explained by the participation of the governor in the “preparation of a terrorist attack” and in a “criminal association.” In addition, the politician is suspected of causing damage to the country, an attempt to undermine the foundations of democracy by force and stage a coup d’état.

The court also cited several pieces of evidence that point to Ibanez’s involvement in the riots. So, the cars of the military police of the federal district escorted the protesters to the venue of the rally, the decree says. In addition, police officers did not properly resist the protesters and even left their posts.

Protests in Brazil began amid dissatisfaction with the results of the presidential election. On October 31, the former president of the country (2003-2010), candidate from the socialist Workers’ Party, Luis Inacio Lula da Silva, following the results of the second round of voting, became the new president of Brazil, defeating the incumbent head of state, Jair Bolsonaro. On January 1, the presidential inauguration took place in Brasilia.

8 January Bolsonaro’s supporters invaded to the Congress building, the Federal Supreme Court and the working residence of the head of state – the Planalto Palace. In response to the protests, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced in the capital of the country, a state of emergency until the end of January. On Twitter, Ibanez Rocha said that more than 400 people were detained during the riots.
