Brazil buys uranium from Russia for first time in 24 years

This year, for the first time since 1999, Brazil purchased a batch of natural and enriched uranium from Russia for $72 million, according to the Brazilian statistical service.
It is noted that a year earlier, Rosatom signed a contract with INB (Industrias Nucleares do Brasil) to fully provide the only Brazilian nuclear power plant (NPP) Angra with enriched uranium in the period from 2023 to 2027. In the spring of this year, the state corporation also reported that it had signed another contract with INB, but this time for the supply of natural uranium.
Thus, this summer, for the first time in 24 years, Brazil imported from Russia 27.1 tons of fuel enriched in uranium-235 in the amount of $18.9 million, and the country also imported 26.9 tons of natural uranium worth $52.7 million, which , in turn, occurred for the first time since at least 1998.
Brazil also buys other radioactive elements from Russia, but in the seven months of 2023 the country purchased only one kilogram worth three million dollars, although last year the country purchased 108 kilograms worth a similar amount.
