Boxer Tim Tszyu, the son of former absolute world champion Konstantin Tszyu, received the World Boxing Organization (WBO) world champion belt in the up to 69.9 kg category without a fight. The former champion, American Jermell Charlo, lost it after he took part in the fight for the title of absolute world champion in a more serious weight category – up to 76.2 kilograms.
Charlo hasn’t defended his title in over a year. According to the rules, his next opponent was supposed to be Tim Tszyu, who had previously become the interim WBO champion. But the American decided otherwise and decided to move to another weight category. He entered the ring against Mexican Saul Alvarez in Las Vegas and lost by unanimous decision. He managed to survive all 12 rounds, but in the 7th round the American was knocked down.
The World Boxing Organization previously warned that Tim Tszyu would become a full-fledged world champion immediately after Charlo entered the ring in a different weight category.
Tim Tszyu has 23 victories, 17 of which by knockout, and not a single loss. Already on October 15 he will have to defend his title. In Broadbirch (Australia) his opponent will be American Brian Mendoza.
