Botanist Semyonov dispelled the myth about the benefits of breaking lilac branches

For a couple of weeks in May, environmental damage has been colossal
Residents of Moscow and the Moscow region flooded the police stations with complaints about barbarians peeling lilac bushes. People write statements against their neighbors, passers-by and various “night raiders” who leave behind broken branches and flower clusters trampled in a hurry.
As it became known to MK, the environmental damage, according to biologists, was colossal in a couple of weeks in May. The fact is that, breaking off branches, people unknowingly damage vegetative shoots, consisting of a stem, leaves and buds, which means that the plant will not be able to continue its flowering this year. In addition, tormenting the shrub, lovers of lilac bouquets inadvertently rip off the bark from it, which means they create a risk for the plant to get sunburn and become vulnerable to microbes.
“There is a myth that lilac must be broken for more lush flowering next year,” says botanist Andrey Semyonov. – In a sense, it has a basis.
When the lilac fades, seeds remain in place of the inflorescences – and that’s exactly what they need to be cut off so that the shrub does not waste energy on their ripening, but saves them for the next year. But this must be done after flowering, and only with secateurs.
According to the law, breaking off a lilac is an administrative offense, and a fine of 500 to 1000 rubles is set for it. True, few people manage to “catch by the hand” for such an offense.
