Boson discoverer Peter Higgs dies

British theoretical physicist Peter Ware Higgs has died at the age of 94. This was announced on Tuesday, April 9, at the University of Edinburgh, where the professor worked.
Higgs is known to the entire scientific world and even to ordinary people due to the fact that the particle he discovered received the name of the scientist – the Higgs boson.
A full 48 years passed between the theoretical discovery of this particle and its practical detection. This expectation paid off handsomely: Higgs was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his long-standing discovery.
Earlier, Physics World recalled that in 2013, Peter Higgs and Francois Englert received a prize for their prediction of the Higgs mechanism – work that they did back in 1964. The authors of the article noted that it would be a real shockif this pair had not received the prize then, because it was in 2012 that physicists from CERN announced that the Higgs boson had finally been discovered.
In July 2022, after three years of modernization, the work of the Large Hadron Collider was resumed – it was with its help that it was possible to confirm the existence of an elementary particle, which was described in 1964 by Peter Higgs.
