Borrell: Ukraine’s accession to NATO does not depend on Stoltenberg

The decision on the possible entry of Ukraine into NATO will be made by the member countries of the alliance, and not by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg. Such a statement did Josep Borrell, head of the EU foreign policy service, in an interview with laSexta TV channel.
“It does not depend on the NATO Secretary General, but on the members of the alliance,” he said. Borrell stressed that the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO has not been discussed before and is not being discussed now.
Previously, the US State Department also notedthat the decision on the possible entry of Ukraine into NATO should be made by the countries of the bloc together. Now the alliance is focused on supporting Kyiv “in resolving the problems they currently face,” the department added.
21 April NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg informed about reaching a consensus by NATO members that Ukraine should become a member of the alliance. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reacted to this statement on Twitter with the phrase “What?!” Earlier, the newspapers Financial Times and Le Monde, citing sources, wrote about the differences between NATO countries on this issue.
In the Kremlin declaredthat Stoltenberg’s words only confirm the correctness of the decision to conduct a special operation. Prior to this, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov noted that the exclusion of the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO is still one of the goals of the special operation of the Russian Federation.
On September 30, 2022, in response to the admission of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to Russia, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky informedthat Ukraine will apply for NATO membership in an expedited manner. At the same time, Stoltenberg supported Kyiv “in choosing its own path”, adding that all members of the bloc must approve the decision on this.
