Borrell: the initiative to establish a tribunal for Ukraine did not find common support in the EU

The initiative of the European Commission to create a special international court for Ukraine did not find the unanimous support of the EU foreign ministers, said EU diplomat Josep Borrell. write “RIA News”.

“There is controversy about whether we need something else besides the ICC [Международный уголовный суд]to fight impunity in Ukraine. Together with the European Commission, I submitted a proposal to the ministers (foreign affairs at a meeting on December 12. – Ed. “RIA Novosti”), and we discussed it, however, without a concrete result. It is possible to create something else, this is an interesting discussion that did not have a specific answer,” Borrell said.

At the same time, the head of the EU diplomacy noted that “absolutely we must do more to fight impunity.” At the same time, Borrell did not talk about the upcoming steps on this issue.

Formerly Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzya declaredthat the idea of ​​the European Commission to create a tribunal for Ukraine under the auspices of the UN is an attempt to legitimize the lawlessness against Russia. He also recalled what the head of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, had previously said about the confiscated Russian assets. “They will try to substantiate this with a resolution adopted by the General Assembly, that is, to give some form of legitimacy to lawlessness,” Nebenzya said.

Von der Leyen suggested creating a structure to manage Russian assets. According to her, the blocked funds of the Russian Central Bank and the assets of Russian oligarchs confiscated due to sanctions should be combined into a fund, the funds of which should be invested, and the profit from these investments should be used for compensation payments to Ukraine.

She also suggested creating an international anti-Russian court and enlisting UN support to implement this idea. The head of the EC specified that Western countries blocked 300 billion euros of reserves of the Central Bank of Russia and 19 billion euros of private funds of Russian businessmen.
