Borrell said the world is unwilling to “play by the rules”

The rules governing the world are gradually exhausting themselves, and many countries are looking for an alternative to the Western model. About it stated EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell in his blog following his visit to the UN General Assembly in New York.

“When the number of participants in a game increases, the natural reaction should be to tighten the rules governing the game. However, we are seeing the opposite trend: the rules that govern the world are running out of steam,” he wrote.

Borrell noted that the world is becoming more and more multipolar, but at the same time less multilateral. In his opinion, this is a paradox that must be overcome.

The politician said that multipolarity is characterized by the growing demand of countries for sovereignty and identity. According to Borrell, they are trying to find an alternative to the West “in economic, technological, military and ideological terms” in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, as well as in Asia.

Also, the head of the EU foreign policy service expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of support for Ukraine from the global South. He noted that countries condemned Russia’s actions within the UN, but they “are not ready to go beyond this point” and do not want the topic of Ukraine to dominate the world agenda.

“This new multipolarity results in a lack of international consensus on almost all issues. At a time when the need for global regulation is growing, this is fueling dissent,” Borrell said.

Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that the model of a unipolar world has outlived its usefulness. According to him, the trend towards multipolarity is strengthening in the world, and those countries that resist this will lose. At the plenary session VEF the president statedthat a new model of cooperation is being born in the world, not according to Western patterns, but “for all mankind.”
