Borrell does not consider the emptying of military depots a threat to EU security

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said he sees no threat to EU security in the devastation of ammunition depots. About it reported RIA News.

“European countries, fortunately for them, are not at war,” he said, answering a related question from journalists. Borrell in response asked why the emptying of military depots could be dangerous and stressed that he did not see this as a direct threat to the EU countries.

The EU representative suggested that the union’s defense ministers decide on the start of supplies of ammunition to Ukraine from European warehouses. Such deliveries can be started within a few weeks and the European Union is ready to spend 1 billion euros on this, he stressed.

In December 2022 Borrell informedthat, against the backdrop of Ukraine’s support, Europe’s military reserves were depleted. At the time, the high representative wrote that Russia’s military operation in Ukraine was “a wake-up call to all of us regarding our military capabilities.” In particular, he noted the lack of “critical defense capabilities to protect themselves from higher-level threats on the European continent itself.”

On December 8 of the same year, the representative of the European Union toldthat stocks are being depleted due to a lack of necessary defense funding. Then he stressed that military aid for the army of Ukraine in the EU is taken not from warehouses, but from the armies of the member countries of the union.

Russia has repeatedly announced retaliatory actions against the supply of weapons to the Ukrainian army. In early February, after the announcement of the supply of Leopard 2 and Abrams tanks to Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia was not sending its tanks to the borders of Western countries, while Western countries decided to supply them to Ukraine, “but we have something to answer, and the use of armored vehicles will not end,” the President emphasized.
