Borrell calls on European navies to patrol the Taiwan Strait

Europe should actively participate in the Taiwan issue, European navies should patrol the Taiwan Strait, declared newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
According to Borrell, the EU’s position on Taiwan is “simple and consistent”: there is only one China, but “definitely not with the use of force.”
“Europe should be very actively involved in this issue, which concerns us economically, commercially and technologically. That is why I am calling on European navies to patrol the Taiwan Strait to show Europe’s commitment to freedom of navigation in this critical area,” the EU diplomat said.
Borrell also stressed that Europe, at the same time, must be vigilant against provocations. He added that China does not directly threaten EU security, but presents a “multi-faceted challenge.”
China considers Taiwan to be its province, so the PRC government opposes any contacts between the island’s administration and countries with which Beijing has diplomatic relations. China has repeatedly noted that it will take “serious measures” to protect the sovereignty of the country and its territorial integrity.
The situation in Taiwan escalated after the visit of Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi to the island in early August 2022. The Chinese Foreign Ministry protested, and China also announced military exercises in Taiwan waters. Later, a delegation of US congressmen and Republican Senator Marsha Blackbear visited the island. The PRC said that such steps violate the “one China” principle.
