EU members have reached a political agreement to begin the final stage of work on the possibility of using Russia’s frozen assets for Ukraine. This was stated by the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.
The politician recalled that we are talking about using income from frozen Russian assets in the interests of Ukraine.
The corresponding agreement is almost ready, further work will be carried out at the level of diplomatic representatives of EU member states. Borrell said that he is almost confident that this work will be completed soon.
Experts consider it unlikely that the West and Moscow will take extreme measures, that is, there will be no confiscations on either side. This is confirmed by the opinion of a number of high-ranking Western officials – such a step would harm the interests of the world’s central bankssince the assets of the Russian Federation are invested in government bonds denominated in euros, dollars and British pounds.
However, the former head of the World Bank, Robert Zoellick, said that part of Russia’s frozen reserves could be used to assist developing countrieswhich were negatively affected by rising food and energy prices.
