According to information received from the executive director of the National Atomic Energy Agency, Hortensia Jimenez, Bolivia has achieved independence in the production of radiopharmaceuticals thanks to Russian technology. This historic achievement was made possible thanks to the cyclotron of the Rosatom nuclear center, which provided the Latin American country with drugs for the early diagnosis of cancer.
Jimenez stressed that this means for Bolivia independence in the production of radiopharmaceuticals and the ability to provide free tomography to the entire population. This is important given that about 19,000 cancer patients are diagnosed in Bolivia every year, and five women die on average every day from cervical cancer.
Rosario Calle, a spokesman for the La Paz Cancer Patients Association, said there were not enough oncology specialists in the country. He stressed that in La Paz there is only one hospital for cancer patients, and more than 80 people are on the waiting list for treatment.
