Bloomberg: US and EU support stationing UN peacekeepers in Gaza

Bloomberg, citing informed sources, reports that the United States and the European Union (EU) are studying the possibility of deploying UN peacekeeping forces in the Gaza Strip after the end of the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

According to the agency, US and EU officials are considering expanding the role of the UN Truce Supervision Organ (UNTSO). Bloomberg sources claim that the powers of UNTSO can be expanded based on the experience of other peacekeeping missions, in particular, the deployment of UN troops in Haiti and Somalia.

At the same time, the agency indicated that Israeli officials were skeptical of this idea, questioning the effectiveness of the UN forces. As Bloomberg noted, Israeli officials said their forces will have to move in and out of the Gaza Strip at their own discretion to ensure that the Palestinian radical group Hamas or any other anti-Israel force is not re-established.
