The United States and China intend to hold negotiations regarding nuclear weapons before the meeting of Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden, as Beijing has begun to build up its arsenal of atomic weapons. Bloomberg reports this, citing its sources familiar with the situation.
It is noted that negotiations are scheduled for next week. The dialogue is said to be aimed at getting the White House an idea of China’s intentions, weeks after the Pentagon released a report saying Beijing had begun producing nuclear weapons faster than expected.
Earlier, the speaker of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of China, Wang Wenbin, stated that an “exchange of views on a number of issues” was planned between the PRC and the United States.
In turn, Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan said that China’s intentions to create up to 1.5 thousand warheads by 2035 marked “one of the largest global nuclear accumulations in history.”
