Bloomberg, citing US intelligence, reported on missiles filled with water instead of fuel in China.
Chinese missiles have in some cases been filled with water instead of fuel. At the same time, missile silo covers in western China are not working properly, preventing them from launching effectively. Bloomberg reports this.
The agency, citing US intelligence, cites this information as examples of corruption and bribery in the Chinese military. According to Bloomberg, the spread of these phenomena allegedly undermined the efforts of the Chinese leadership to modernize its armed forces and raised questions about the country’s readiness to wage war.
The agency recalled the resignation in October 2023 of Defense Minister Li Shangfu, who served in this position for only seven months. After his departure, according to Bloomberg, a purge was carried out both in the armed forces and in the military-industrial complex. In particular, on December 29, nine representatives of the military-industrial complex were removed from office, including five associated with the missile forces. A few days earlier, it was announced that three representatives of the management of companies that produce missiles were being fired.
“Corruption in China’s missile force and throughout the country’s defense industry is so great that U.S. officials now believe Xi Jinping is less likely to consider major military action in the coming year than he otherwise would be,” summed up the results in Bloomberg.
