Bloomberg: Meloni pushes Orban to unblock aid to Ukraine

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is trying to persuade his Hungarian counterpart, Prime Minister Viktor Orban, to abandon his standoff with the EU over support for Ukraine. According to information obtained by Bloomberg from sources, Meloni is inviting Orban’s Fidesz party to join the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR). Such a move will strengthen the position of the pan-European ECR party ahead of the upcoming European elections, where far-right groups are predicted to win.

To bring Fidesz into the ECR, the Italian prime minister wants Orban to change his approach to Ukraine’s EU membership aspirations and reset relations with Kiev. Discussions between representatives of the leaders of Italy and Hungary took place at different levels, but they have not yet led to a decision, Bloomberg clarifies.

Meloni’s interest in strengthening the ECR’s representation in the new European Parliament is due to the pan-European trend of increasing popularity of right-wing parties. Currently, the group includes 62 European parliamentary mandates, which is 8.26% of the total.
