The ruling coalition of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz intends to double military assistance to Ukraine. Bloomberg reports this with reference to its sources.
According to the agency, the Bundestag budget committee next week will approve the allocation of an additional 4 billion euros in 2024. Thus, it is planned to spend 8 billion euros on financing weapons and ammunition next year.
The Bundestag’s decision will increase Germany’s defense spending to 2.1% of GDP. It is reported that Germany’s defense budget will exceed 2% of gross domestic product for the first time in more than three decades.
Berlin is expected to purchase F-35 fighter jets, Chinook helicopters, and Arrow missile defense systems for Kyiv.
Germany is Ukraine’s largest military sponsor in Europe. According to the Kiel Institute of World Economics, since February 202, Germany has already sent Ukraine military assistance totaling 17 billion euros. At the same time, at the beginning of the SVO, Scholz announced a special fund of 100 billion euros for defense purposes. Two-thirds of this is expected to be spent by the end of the year.
German Chancellor Scholz also recently promised to significantly expand the country’s military potential after the special fund money is exhausted. According to him, this will confirm the strengthening of Germany’s role as NATO’s European center.
