Bloomberg: Apple delays mixed reality headset release until June 2023

Apple has postponed the release of the mixed reality headset from April to June 2023. The device can be presented at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), writes Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources.

The interlocutors of the publication explained that they decided to postpone the release after unsuccessful testing of the headset, which revealed technical problems. According to sources, Dan Riccio, a former head of the hardware department, is actively involved in the development of the headset. Apple declined to comment.

Bloomberg insider and reporter Mark Gurman notes that Apple has been working on the technology since 2015. The company planned to introduce the device in June 2022, then the release was postponed to January 2023, and later postponed him until spring.

Bloomberg writes that after the presentation at WWDC, the headset will go on sale. Gurman admitted that the presentation date of the device could change again, however, according to an insider, Apple intends to bring the headset to the market by the end of 2023. Gurman previously wrote that the cost of the gadget would be about $3,000. According to the reporter, the high price could make the Apple device a “niche product”.

The device will feature the original M2 chip, 4K resolution displays, augmented reality cameras, and a new operating system internally dubbed xrOS. It is expected that it will be available to users familiar to Apple applications – “Messages”, “Mail”, Safari and TV.

In addition, the company intends release a cheaper version of the headset in 2024 or early 2025 – AR glasses. Apple planned to introduce the device immediately after the debut of the mixed reality headset, but later the corporation revised plans.
