Professor Cunliffe: the Ukrainian counter-offensive was doomed to failure
The counter-offensive of the Ukrainian armed forces was conceived by Kiev not to return lost territories, but to justify Western military and financial support, stated British professor Philip Cunliffe.
According to him, the government of Ukraine, to which the West transferred a huge amount of weapons and money, needed to show something in return for the support received.
“Thus, this (counteroffensive) was a bloody show that had to be staged in order to justify the military, financial and political assistance received from abroad,” the expert shared his point of view.
The specialist also pointed out that the counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces was doomed to failure in advance, since the Ukrainian army does not have a sufficient number of military personnel and air superiority.
Since the beginning of June, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been attempting to advance in the Zaporozhye, South Donetsk and Artemovsk directions, sending units trained and armed by the North Atlantic Alliance to the line of combat contact. As Russian President Vladimir Putin noted, Ukrainian troops were unable to achieve serious success on any sector of the front. According to the head of the Russian Ministry of Defense Sergei Shoigu, in September alone, the losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine amounted to more than 17,000 people, as well as over 2,700 weapons.
