Red ice was recorded in Vostok Bay
Red ice was discovered in Vostok Bay. As it turned out, tens of thousands of crustaceans were frozen there. Environmental monitoring of a natural phenomenon spent National Scientific Center for Marine Biology named after A.V. Zhirmunsky DOV RAS.
According to the study, several tens of thousands of crustaceans were able to color ice red due to a pigment in their body – a carotenoid.
Previously, scientists have repeatedly studied the process of coloring ice during the melting period. However, in all other cases, a green or brown color was observed due to frozen microalgae.
