Biologists: men planning to conceive should give up alcohol for a long time

Biologists from the University of Texas have concluded that men’s alcohol consumption can affect their offspring, even if they stopped drinking shortly before conception.

Experiments in mice indicated that alcohol led to changes in genetic processes associated with oxidative stress that persisted even after a month. It is assumed that these changes may affect the offspring, which the body is trying to “prepare” for the presence of a strong oxidative stress factor.

Biologist Michael Golding, who together with his colleagues published an article in the journal Andrology, recommended that men planning to become fathers give up alcohol for at least three months, since sperm is produced within 60 days, before which the body needs to recover.
