US President Joe Biden vows to fund democracy development programs around the world

US President Joe Biden on Wednesday, opening the “Summit for Democracy”, promised that he will allocate $690 million for democracy development programs around the world, reports the Associated Press (AP).

The funding, AP noted, will go to programs that support “free and independent media,” fight corruption, promote human rights, and promote technologies that strengthen democracy, as well as programs that support “free and fair elections.”

The summit is hosted by the United States, leaders of more than 100 states are invited to it. Other hosts are the Netherlands, South Korea, Costa Rica and Zambia.

The first day was held in an online format, and the second will be held in a hybrid format – meetings of the authorities with representatives of civil society will be held in each of the host countries.

The first US Democracy Summit was held at the end of 2021.
