US President Joseph Biden responded negatively to the question of whether he considers it necessary to include Russia in the US list of countries sponsoring terrorism.
“No,” – said the head of the White House, answering the relevant question.
State Department spokesman Jim O’Brien said giving Russia the status of countries sponsoring terrorism could negatively affect the grain deal.
“State Sponsors of Terrorism” is a list of states that, according to the official position of the US State Department, have repeatedly supported acts of international terrorism.
Inclusion on the list entails severe economic and political sanctions from the United States.
The Department of State is required to maintain a list pursuant to section 1754(c) of the National Defense Act for fiscal year 2019, section 40 of the Arms Export Control Act, and section 620A of the Foreign Assistance Act. As of 2021, the list includes Cuba, Iran, North Korea, and Syria. Earlier on the list were Iraq, Libya, South Yemen and Sudan.
