Berlusconi called for the need to end Italy’s dependence on Russian gas

Italy should abandon Russian gas before Russia stops supplying energy to the country. Such a statement did leader of the Forward Italy party, former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, in an interview with Foglio newspaper.
He noted that he supports the proposal to stop the import of Russian gas, if at the same time “conditions for alternative supplies are created.” Berlusconi added that investments in renewable energy sources and research into clean nuclear energy are also needed.
“Then we can do away with addiction, which gives us obvious problems,” he summed up.
After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, European countries began to declare their intention to get rid of their dependence on Russian gas. This goal was also set by the Italian authorities. At the end of June, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi announced that gas supplies from Russia to Italy had been reduced from 40% to 25%.
In July, Italian Minister for Environmental Modernization and Transformation Roberto Cingolani declaredthat by winter the country will become “almost independent” of Russian gas. It is planned to achieve full independence by 2024. In August, he noted that gas storage facilities in the country were 74% full.
