The police banned the use of flags, military marches and current slogans at monuments in Berlin
The Berlin police announced a ban on the use of Russian and Ukrainian flags on May 8 and 9 at Soviet war memorials in Treptow Park, Tiergarten and Schoenholzer Heide Park. At the same time, representatives of law enforcement agencies stressed that, like last year, the ban does not apply to diplomats and veterans of the Second World War. In 2022, the Berlin Senate accompanied a similar decision with a statement that its goal was to prevent world war memorials from being overshadowed by conflicts over the situation in Ukraine.
This year, law enforcement agencies also issued an explanation: “This war should not break stereotypes in Berlin, especially in connection with a symbolic date, should not go beyond democratic discourse and escalate into a conflict or confrontation.”
In addition to flags near the monuments, the performance of marching and military songs will be prohibited, and in oral speeches, “pronouncing calls that, due to the current situation, can be used to approve or glorify” the NWO.
The restrictions that apply to representatives and supporters of both sides of the Ukrainian conflict last time caused a lot of criticism from the Ukrainian side.
