International Football Federation (FIFA) named contenders for the title of the best player in 2022. Among the contenders were Karim Benzema (Real Madrid), Kylian Mbappe (PSG, France) and Lionel Messi (PSG, Argentina).

The names of the nominees for the title of the best FIFA player among women, the best coach of the federation among women and men, the best goalkeeper of FIFA among women and men and the nominees for the Ferenc Puskas Award were also announced.

The finalists were selected by an international jury consisting of current coaches and captains of the national teams, journalists and fans who voted on the official FIFA website. The winner will be announced at a ceremony in Paris on February 27th.

In January was made public the initial list of contenders for the FIFA award, consisting of 14 players. It also included Neymar (Brazil, Paris Saint-Germain) and Mohamed Salah (Egypt, Liverpool). The list did not include the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo.

In 2020 and 2021, the Polish striker Robert Lewandowski, who was playing for Bayern at the time, received the award.
