Another blow for Benoît Girondel. After his retirement from the UTMB at the end of August around the 50th km (out of 170), the double winner of the Diagonale des Fous (in 2017 and 2018) announced his withdrawal for the legendary race in Reunion (165 km and 10,200 m elevation), which will take place from October 20 to 23. The 36-year-old Frenchman suffers from a posterior tibial injury and preferred “take a break rather than escalate the situation”.
“A painful ankle for a while has prevented me from putting my foot down comfortably, he explained at the end of August, a year after finishing 2nd in the TDS, the most technical race of the UTMB week. A little complicated therefore on a 170 km trail race… In the right rhythm however, I had to stop the adventure prematurely. As I get older, my vision of the sport that has given me so much evolves and my desire to transmit and share my experience with the youngest grows more and more… »
François D’haene, quadruple winner of the UTMB and the Diagonale des Fous, has announced his participation, in the race for a fifth title. Ludovic Pommeret, title holder and winner of the TDS this summer, will also be at the start, but for a personal challenge with his wife.
