Belgium opposed the introduction of a price limit only for pipeline gas supplied from Russia, instead Brussels proposed limiting the cost of all imported gas, taking into account prices in Asia, Reuters reported. transmits TASS.
“Belgium wants such a measure to be introduced taking into account gas prices in Asia,” the statement said.
Yesterday it became known that the European Commission intends at the meeting of the Council of the EU on September 9, to submit a proposal to set a ceiling price for Russian gas. At the same time, EC President Ursula von der Leyen noted that the share of Russian gas in the volume of imports in 2022 decreased from 40 to 9%.
According to the draft document developed by the EC, which regulates the conditions for limiting the cost of fuel, prices for Russian pipeline gas should not exceed 50 euros per 1 MWh (about $528 per 1,000 cubic meters), sources told Politico. At the same time, the publication noted, against the introduction of a price ceiling for Russian gas speaks Germany, which admits that with the introduction of a price ceiling, Russia can completely stop deliveries, which will especially painfully affect the countries of Central Europe – the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania.
A week earlier, the finance ministers of the G7 countries (USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Italy, France and Germany) announced their intention to impose a price ceiling on Russian oil. To do this, they want to create a “broad international coalition” that will set a price limit for Russian oil. The US Treasury believes that the introduction of such a measure will guarantee the supply of Russian oil regardless of new sanctions, as well as avoid sharp jumps in gas prices.
At the same time, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the idea of restricting gas prices from Russia by administrative means is “nonsense and nonsense.” Russia won’tthe president stressed, to supply gas, oil, coal and other energy resources if this does not meet the interests of the country’s economy and turns out to be unprofitable for it.
