Belgium allows pets to be buried with their owners

In Belgium, authorities in the Walloon region have clarified the rules that must be followed if an owner wishes to be buried with their pet.

The main condition for a joint funeral is the death of the animal and its cremation before the owner passes away. Therefore, euthanasia of an animal after the death of the owner is not permitted.

“The burial of the deceased and the ashes of the animal must be carried out simultaneously,” says the official explanation on the website of the regional administration.

Funeral home employees confirm that requests for joint funerals with animals do indeed come from relatives of those who expressed such a wish during their lifetime. For example, relatives of the deceased owner of two dogs who outlived their owner applied for such a service. But the veterinarian did not agree to euthanize the animals in order to fulfill the owner’s will. A similar case was recorded with the owner of ten cats.
