Euractiv: Botox injections caused 87 cases of botulism
EU Agency for Communicable Disease Control tied botulism outbreak in Europe with botox injections for weight loss. This procedure is practiced in Turkey despite the fact that its effectiveness has not been proven.
Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT), also known as Botox, is commonly used to smooth wrinkles. Its use for weight loss is less known. The drug is administered to slow down digestion and make you feel fuller for a longer time. The effect is believed to last for about three months. However, there is no documented evidence that Botox is effective for weight loss.
Experts attribute this practice to the recent outbreak of botulism. It is a disease that affects the nerves of the body, causing difficulty in breathing, muscle paralysis and, in some cases, death.
At the end of March 2023, the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) linked 87 cases of botulism to intragastric administration of botulinum toxin.
All cases concerned Europeans who traveled to Turkey for this procedure. In the republic, its prices are lower than in Europe by 40-50%. This is due to the fact that in the United States and European countries they do not approve of this practice of losing weight.
“Botulinum toxin is approved in the EU for a variety of conditions, including muscle pain, certain muscle spasms, excessive armpit sweating, excessive salivation and some cosmetic procedures. It is not approved for weight loss,” experts said.
