Novaya Gazeta journalist Yelena Milashina and Alexander Nemov, who were attacked by unknown persons in Chechnya the day before, flew on a special plane to Moscow from Beslan, together with Novaya Gazeta editor-in-chief Dmitry Muratov and journalist Alexei Venediktov (the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation recognized him as a foreign agent). Ombudsman of Chechnya Mansur Soltaev informedthat the attackers on Lena and Alexander have not yet been found, since they were traveling in a car without license plates.
Elena Milashina and Alexander Nemov arrived in Chechnya on the morning of June 4 to announce the verdict to Zarema Musaeva, the wife of the former judge of the Supreme Court of the republic, Saidi Yangulbaev. On the way from the airport to Grozny they were attacked by unknown persons. About the attack reported President Vladimir Putin.
According to Tamerlan Tsgoev, Commissioner for Human Rights in North Ossetia, Yelena Milashina suffered a head injury and several fingers were broken. Alexander Nemov was stabbed in the leg. The attackers shaved the journalist’s head and doused it with green paint. According to her, she was also threatened with cutting off her finger to unlock her phone; when she refused, she was beaten on every finger.
The head of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Bastrykin, ordered an inspection. The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, said he had instructed the competent authorities to make every effort to identify the attackers.
