“Medical” tourism to Turkey, in particular to Istanbul, is gaining popularity among Russians. But in Britain they are already trying to ban it, citing 22 deaths in recent years.

The Turkish publication Turizm Gazetesi reported that the top 10 main reasons that bring Russians to Turkey included so-called “medical tours” to Istanbul.

“Previously, the main clientele of our clinic were men from Arab countries and Iran,” says dermatologist Salih Yilmaz. “They came for cosmetic procedures. And after the Russian partner began advertising the services of an Istanbul clinic similar to ours in Russia, the Russians also went.

As for Russians, the top ten reasons why we visit Turkey, according to the Turkish tourism industry, of course, also include recreation and shopping. However, in winter, vacation as a reason for travel gives way to practical purposes. And visits to specialized clinics as part of “health tourism” came into second place immediately after purchases of “sanctioned goods” – things that are not supplied to Russia.

And it is precisely at the “fifth point,” if you believe the British press, that medical tourism to Istanbul from Britain threatens to end. According to a London magazine dedicated to aesthetic medicine, the “medical and cosmetic travel” program to Turkey is under threat of forced closure. Since the end of September, an investigation has been underway into 22 (!) deaths among British citizens as a result of services received in Istanbul clinics.

“No, they didn’t die right on the operating table, these are long-term consequences of the intervention,” they answer in a similar clinic in London. “But our authorities have reason to believe that the reason why the patients died was precisely the transplants they received in Turkey. 22 deaths in 4 years. In Britain, “health tourism” to Istanbul is called “cheap” – from 5 thousand euros per week. Although to ordinary Russians, taking into account the exchange rate of the ruble, it does not seem like that. So far, in Foggy Albion, on the initiative of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, only advertising of so-called “medical voyages” – tour packages that include transfer, accommodation and medical intervention in Turkey with support from the staff of a Turkish clinic is prohibited. But it is possible that, based on the results of the investigation, the British will be banned not only from advertising, but also from “cheap medical travel to Turkey” in general. The UK government’s minister for mental health and women’s health strategy said in the English-language press that “clients considering a Brazilian butt lift procedure in Istanbul clinics are not being given enough information about the risks.” Noting that “the risk of death from this fashionable procedure is at least 10 times higher than from most other cosmetic “tunings” that are fashionable today.
