The Spanish football club Barcelona filed a claim with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against the St. Petersburg Zenit. The Catalans claim that the Russian club is obliged to pay Barcelona €490 thousand under the terms of the agreement on the transfer of Brazilian footballer Malcolm to Zenit, the Spanish newspaper reports Mundo Deportivo.

Barcelona points to a clause in the agreement on the transfer of the player, which obliges Zenit to pay the Catalan club €490 thousand for each entry of the Russian team into the group stage of the Champions League, provided that Malcolm plays at least half of the matches in the Russian Premier League. Zenit, in turn, refers to a FIFA resolution that exempts the club from paying this amount because it was suspended from playing in European competitions after the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian military conflict, the publication reports. The CAS has scheduled a hearing in this case for March 22.

Malcolm moved from Barcelona to Zenit on August 2, 2019 for €40 million plus €5 million in bonuses. At the beginning of his debut season in the St. Petersburg club, the Brazilian received an injury, from which he recovered only in 2020. He played in the group stage of the Champions League for Zenit only in the 2020/21 season. In the spring of 2022, UEFA announced that it would not allow Russian clubs to participate in European competitions. Summer 2023 Malcolm moved from Zenit to Saudi Al-Hilal for €60 million.
