“Barbarians came with sledgehammers”: the video of the ex-Wagnerian became a test of humanity

In the Middle Ages, crowds gathered for executions. People did not avert their eyes when they were quartered, hung, impaled in front of them. Those were wild times, and who would have thought that humanity was destined to return to them. And that is exactly what apparently happened.
How else to explain the fact that a shocking video of an execution has appeared on the Internet, in which a man’s head is smashed with a sledgehammer? I draw your attention right away: the death penalty has not been applied in Russia since 1998, and the video shows a citizen of the Russian Federation. The video contains scenes of violence, but for some reason it has not yet been blocked. Users not only actively watched and commented on this, but even tried to justify the “sledgehammer”. The comments to the video sounded no less wild: “To a dog – dog death.” After all, in barbarian times, the word “dog” was abusive, and the phrase “dog death” meant death without the right to repentance.
Basement. A concrete block to which a man is tied. He says that his name is Evgeny Anatolyevich Nuzhin, that he was born in 1967 and received a sentence for murder. The man says that he went from the colony to the front, where he went over to the side of Ukraine. On November 11, allegedly while on the street in Kyiv, he lost consciousness after a blow to the head and only woke up. He is told that there will be a trial. And then the unknown strikes Nuzhin’s head with a sledgehammer.
This video, aptly titled “Hammer of Retribution”, originally appeared on the Greyzone telegram channel, which positions itself as being associated with Wagner’s private military company (PMC). The next day, the press service of the Concorde company, owned by Russian businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, who calls himself the creator of the Wagner PMC, published a comment. “In this show, it is clear that he did not find happiness in Ukraine, but met with unkind, but fair people … It seems to me that this film is called “To the Dog – Dog’s Death”.
Prigozhin says about the video that it is “a wonderful director’s work, it looks in one breath.” And he expresses the hope that “during the filming, not a single animal was harmed.” Was this a mock execution? Or was Nuzhin really killed?
Convicted Nuzhin really exists (or existed), back in 1999 he was sentenced to 24 years in prison for murder. There is also a video interview that he gave to the Ukrainian media, where he told how Yevgeny Prigozhin arrived in his colony in the summer of 2022 and recruited prisoners to be sent to the war zone. It turns out that at least two facts have been established: Nuzhin was in a Russian colony, then in the NVO zone and went over to the side of the Ukrainians.
According to the new legislation of the Russian Federation, these actions are considered a crime. But no changes were made to the Criminal Code that would allow lynching or carry out the death penalty. Even despite the statements of individual statesmen, for example, in the past a humanist, and now an adherent of tough measures, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev.
And this means that the video in any case should be condemned by society and its authors (or killers – if it is not staged after all) punished according to the law of the Russian Federation. So far, however, neither has happened.
It is especially difficult with society. Many years ago, Academician Alexander Asmolov predicted the return of the culture of barbarism, seeing its beginnings.
– The formula “Fights without rules” has become the norm of behavior in Russia. They act in the style of “if the enemy does not surrender, they destroy him”, “whoever is not with us is against us.” This is the ethics of dehumanization.
According to Asmolov, barbarians came into culture during this period. And so they came. With sledgehammers.
Periods of barbarism may be short-lived, or they may last long. At the same time, anyone who does not fit into certain frameworks is at risk of becoming their victim. A “sledgehammer” without trial or investigation can fall on the head of someone who yesterday was “one’s own”, and today suddenly seemed “stranger”. The only defense against barbarism, its opposite, has always been the law. That is why the members of the HRC (including the author of these lines) turned to the Investigative Committee of Russia. The answer to the question depends on whether there will be any reaction – who will win today: a sledgehammer or the law?
And about the phrase “dog – dog death.” A modern, civilized person is unlikely to understand the meaning of this aphorism. Because for you and me, a dog is a kind animal, and the task of the state and society is to protect the rights of our smaller brothers. Under the law, for bullying dogs can give (and give!) A real term of imprisonment. The law prohibits dogs to be euthanized, destroyed in any other way.
But in the Middle Ages, our ancestors called “dog” in Rus’ unkind people. And “dog death” is the death of a person who lived an unworthy life, and therefore did not deserve a worthy end (he died suddenly, in bad conditions, without repentance).
That is, in the modern world, “dog death” is just the death of an animal, but in the Middle Ages it is completely, completely different. Feel the difference? A creepy video can be considered a message to people. See, understand and make a choice – who you want to become and in what world to live.
