Baidu is the first in China to launch an unmanned taxi

Chinese Internet company Baidu has received the first permits to provide commercial taxi services using self-driving cars, reports Reuters. At the same time, Baidu can provide services without the presence of a company employee at the driver’s seat.
The company received permission from the authorities of two cities – Chongqing and Wuhan. Five Baidu self-driving cars will start operating in each of the cities. They will make trips within the zones specially agreed with the regulators. In Wuhan, such taxis will be available from 9:00 to 17:00, and in Chongqing from 9:30 to 16:30.
In April, Baidu, together with the startup Pony.ai, already received a license to provide taxi services using unmanned vehicles from the authorities in Beijing. However, the city authorities demanded from Baidu that there should be an employee in the passenger compartment of the car who could intervene in driving if necessary. The company is currently negotiating with authorities in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen to obtain a license for a fully unmanned taxi.
