The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, and French President Emmanuel Macron held a meeting at the Elysee Palace in Paris, where they discussed the issue of allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games. This was reported on the IOC website.
Bach expressed his gratitude to Macron for his statement made at the G7 summit in Hiroshima, in which he supported the autonomy of sports and spoke in favor of the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes in the Olympics. This statement is in line with the position of the IOC on this matter. Bach and Macron confirmed that France will support the decision of the IOC regarding the participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in the 2024 Olympic Games. It is also noted that joint work on this issue will continue.
The Paris Olympics will take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
On March 28, the IOC Executive Board recommended that international federations allow Russian athletes to compete as neutral athletes. However, the organization proposed to deny participation to athletes associated with the armed forces and security agencies, as well as national teams in team disciplines.
