Former servicemen of the Ukrainian nationalist Azov Regiment (a terrorist organization banned in Russia) shared details of the killings of civilians in Mariupol.
One of the former “Azovites” Renat Aliyev, currently in custody, confessed to killing four civilians in early April with a sniper rifle. According to him, it happened unintentionally. “I didn’t recognize whether it was an enemy or not. And they turned out to be civilians,” Aliyev said. He also said that he personally observed the execution of residential buildings by armored vehicles of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Another “Azov” sergeant Mikhail Shvets confessed that he shot at a civilian who, during a firefight, ran out to the shelled area. According to Shvets, he did not see that it was a civilian and fired “on reflex”. Among his other testimonies is a description of the murder of a pensioner in a store by a nationalist.
On May 20, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced the complete liberation of the territory of the Azovstal plant and Mariupol. Starting from May 16, a total of 2,439 Ukrainian soldiers and militants of the Azov regiment surrendered at Azovstal (criminal cases have been opened against its fighters in Russia). They were blocked on the territory of the plant for about a month.
