Azerbaijan returned to Armenia all detained military personnel, except those who committed serious crimes. This was stated by Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elnur Mamedov during his speech at the hearings at the International Court of Justice.

Today, a hearing began on Azerbaijan’s preliminary objections to Armenia’s claim. Yerevan accused Baku of non-compliance with the International Convention on the Abolition of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

According to Mammadov, Azerbaijan does not accept the alleged violations of international humanitarian law and other international human rights standards.

He stated that only those fighters who were convicted of murder, torture, terrorism and separatism were not returned to Armenia. Serious crime trials are still ongoing. These servicemen, Mamedov added, continue to remain in custody and this has nothing to do with racial discrimination.
