Austria opposed NATO-style security guarantees for Kyiv

Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg, on the eve of a meeting of foreign ministers of the European Union (EU) member countries in Kiev, said that future security guarantees for Ukraine should not include NATO-style collective defense obligations. The minister’s words are quoted by the Kurier newspaper.
Schallenberg argues that the moment to think about is what will happen after the end of the Ukrainian conflict. As the head of the Austrian Foreign Ministry noted, security guarantees for Ukraine are necessary, but they should not imply obligations to provide military assistance to Kyiv like Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
It is noted that the fifth article of the North Atlantic Treaty, which was signed in Washington in 1949, enshrines the principle of NATO’s collective defense, which provides for a collective response in the event of an armed attack on one or more member countries of the bloc.
