51-year-old Australian traveler Tim Shaddock and his dog Bella drifted in the Pacific Ocean on their catamaran for three months. The rescue story was told by the Australian broadcaster 9 News on Sunday, July 16.
In April, Shaddock planned to take his catamaran from the port of La Paz in Mexico to the French Polynesia archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, he had to cover 6,000 kilometers. En route, they were hit by a storm that damaged the electronics and radio communications on the catamaran, rendering the ship unmanageable. Shaddock and his dog drifted on the high seas for three months until they were spotted by a helicopter from a passing fishing trawler on July 6.
All the while, the Australian and his dog drank rain water and ate raw fish they caught in the ocean with a fishing net. The rescued are now heading back to Mexico aboard a trawler.
“I went through a very difficult test at sea. I just need rest and good food, because I have been alone for a long time. Otherwise, everything is fine with my health,” said Tim Shaddock.
